Yakuake

Yakuake is a Quake-style terminal for KDE. Linux format touts it as the next generation of Konsole. I think it’s just cool. Yakuake is a terminal window that magically scrolls down smoothly from the top border of your screen when you press a set key combination.

Yakuake in action.

The beauty of Yakuake is that you don’t need to open up a new terminal every time. You can keep Yakuake running in the background, hidden when not needed and call it back when you do. I find that this is more productive and just plain cool.

Note: Don’t set the Yakuake shortcut key to any that have already been used such as [ctr+esc]. It doesn’t work and you won’t be able to open Yakuake anymore. If this happens, edit the yakuakerc file in ~/.kde/share/config/.
